Why

We love trees and forests. In this environmentally conscious world we are often asked, “How can you love trees and cut them down to earn your living?”

We hold that tension everyday and the simple answer is that we work with wood consciously, in a way that respects the life of the tree. To  hold a 3 inch wide piece of Douglas Fir and count 140 years of growth rings bestows a responsibility to the woodworker. How does one honor the life of a tree that is many centuries old?

Knowing where the wood has come from, how it was cut, stacked and dried is important to us.

Wood has a life of its own, a desire in how it wants to be expressed in the world (not unlike us humans). Each piece is unique, with variations of color, grain, texture, shape and size. By considering these qualities we can determine where and how to best use the wood.

Everything we make comes with its own story. Through that story we want our work to foster a better connection between the user and the land it came from.

“He who works with his hands is a laborer.
He who works with his hands and his head is a craftsman.
He who works with his hands and his head and his heart is an artist.”
― Saint Francis of Assisi

Who
IMG_7783.JPG

Devin has been crafting things from wood for nearly 25 years. Starting with cabinets and furniture in high-school and winning awards for his craftsmanship. He has since explored many forms of wood working from home building, and timber framing to finishing carpentry and cabinet making. When he is not in the workshop he is out amongst the forests, be it hiking, biking or skiing.

Inspiration comes from the natural world and a study of the woodcraft though the ages. Devin and his family live surrounded by trees in the heart of the great bear rainforest in the Bella Coola Valley.
